A classic climbing variety that delivers both beauty and bounty! Blue Lake produces masses of delicate white flowers that give way to long, smooth pods packed with deliciously sweet flavour. The beans stay tender and tasty even after cooking — perfect for steaming, stir-fries, or freezing for later use. Let some mature for a hearty crop of creamy Haricot beans.
Harvest
From June onwards, once pods reach 10–15cm long — pick before the beans inside begin to swell for the sweetest flavour.
Growing Instructions
Planting: Position plants 25cm apart in well-drained soil and full sun. Provide support with canes, trellis, or netting for them to climb.
Soil Preparation: Enrich soil with compost or organic matter before planting to boost growth and yield.
Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry spells. Water generously once flowers appear to encourage pod formation.
Feeding: Apply a high-potash fertiliser every two weeks once plants start to flower for a stronger crop.
Insects: Blue Lake attracts pollinators naturally — great for gardens buzzing with life!
Top Tips
Pick Regularly: Harvest often to encourage new pods and extend your cropping season.
Companion Planting: Try growing up sweetcorn instead of canes — it supports the beans and attracts helpful insects that deter pests.
Freezer Friendly: Blanch and freeze pods to enjoy their sweetness all year round.
Early Start: Sow indoors in spring and plant out once the frost has passed for an earlier harvest.
