Canadian Wonder is a reliable, easy-to-grow variety that delivers a bumper crop of green, oval-to-flat pods packed with rich flavour. Harvest them young and tender, or let them mature into deep red-maroon kidney beans — perfect for chillis, soups, and stews. A great all-rounder for any veg patch!
From June onwards, pick pods when they reach 10–15cm long, before the beans start to form inside.
• For kidney beans, harvest when pods begin to yellow, shell them, and leave overnight to deepen in colour.
• To dry beans, let the pods dry naturally on the plant before storing them in airtight containers.
• Planting: Space plants 15cm apart in well-drained soil, positioned in full sun.
• Watering: Keep well watered until established and throughout dry periods.
• Flowering: Give plants an extra drink once the flowers appear to encourage strong pod development.
• Two Crops in One: Pick some pods young for fresh eating and let others mature into kidney beans for storage.
• Soil Health: Rotate where you grow beans each year to help prevent soil-borne pests and diseases.
• Continuous Picking: Regular harvesting encourages more pods and a longer cropping season.
