A striking and edible garden showstopper, Green Globe produces large, tender artichoke globes packed with flavour. Its jagged silvery leaves add a sculptural touch to flower beds, and if left to flower, they become a bee magnet, helping pollinate your other plants.
From July the following year of planting — pick globes when large, swollen, and unopened. Smaller ones can be picked too for a delicate taste.
• Spacing: Plant 1m apart to give these giants room to grow.
• Position: Full sun, well-drained soil, and a sheltered spot.
• Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry spells.
• First Year: Cut back any flower heads to let the plant establish.
• Autumn Care: Trim stems and protect the crown from frost.
• Second Season: Allow main globes to form; pick the top globe when fully developed and any side globes once they are large enough.
Top Tips:
Give Them Space: Artichokes love space, so don’t crowd them.
Encourage Strong Growth: Cutting back in the first year encourages strong crown development for future harvests.
Flower Power: Let flowers bloom if you want a stunning garden feature and happy pollinators.
Keep Soil Moist: Keep soil evenly moist to ensure tender, high-quality globes.
