Heartsease

A charming wildflower, also known as wild pansy, Heartsease produces delicate three-petalled blooms in shades of purple, yellow, and lavender from April to September. Perfect for adding a splash of colour to borders or containers, the flowers are edible and can be used fresh in salads, or crystallised to decorate cakes and puddings. Traditionally, Heartsease has been used in herbal medicine to support respiratory health and soothe skin conditions like eczema.


Planting
Where: Beds or containers in well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.


Care
Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry periods.
Protection: Guard against slugs and snails.

Size: 15 – 30cm × 15 – 20cm.


Harvesting
Flowers: Pick carefully in the morning when blooms are most vibrant. Use fresh in dishes or dry for herbal teas. Handle gently to avoid damaging stems and petals.
