Nero Di Toscana

A striking and flavour-packed kale with deep, dark green, savoyed leaves that bring both beauty and nutrition to your garden! Also known as Black Tuscan, Palm Cabbage, or Cavolo Nero, this Italian heirloom is easy to grow, incredibly hardy, and perfect for harvesting tender leaves throughout the colder months. Delicious in soups, stir-fries, and “cut-and-come-again” salads.

Harvest
Around 6–7 weeks after planting. Pick a few outer leaves at a time, leaving the centre to regrow. Its flavour sweetens beautifully after the first frosts of winter.

Growing Instructions

  • Planting: Each plug contains 2–3 plants — plant as a bunch without separating seedlings to avoid root damage. Space 50cm apart in well-drained soil, in full sun or semi-shade.

  • Soil & Support: Bury the plug up to the first leaves and firm the soil gently around the base to support growth.

  • Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry periods for tender, sweet leaves.

  • Feeding: Apply a liquid fertiliser every two weeks to boost leaf production.

  • Insects: Protect from cabbage white butterflies and aphids using fine mesh netting during summer.

Top Tips

  • Remove the thick central stem before cooking for a softer texture.

  • Regular picking encourages fresh new leaves and prolonged harvests.

  • The colder it gets, the sweeter it tastes — frost actually improves the flavour!

  • Ideal for smaller gardens or pots — compact, productive, and ornamental too.
