Patio Pea – Onward

A true garden favourite, this is one of the easiest and most rewarding peas to grow! Compact yet highly productive, this variety produces masses of thick, double pods packed with 6–8 sweet, juicy peas. Perfect for pots, borders, or beds, they’re deliciously fresh and best eaten straight after picking — once you’ve tried homegrown peas, there’s no going back!

Harvest
Around 5–6 weeks after planting, when pods feel plump and firm. For the sweetest flavour, pick and eat fresh — ideally within 30 minutes of harvesting.

Growing Instructions

  • Planting: Space plants 10cm apart in well-drained soil, in a sunny but sheltered position.

  • Support: Use pea sticks, trellis, or twigs as the plants grow taller to keep them upright and tidy.

  • Alternative Growing Method: For a more natural look (and a bit of family fun), plant them 10cm apart and let them grow freely — kids will love hunting for the hidden pods!

  • Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry spells for maximum pod production.

Top Tips

  • Succession Planting: Sow every 4 weeks for a steady crop throughout the season.

  • Fresh Flavour: Harvest little and often — young pods are the sweetest!

  • Companion Planting: Avoid planting near onions or garlic, as they can stunt pea growth.

  • Soil Boost: Work in plenty of compost before planting to help the roots fix nitrogen and improve soil health.
