Romaine Lettuce

A crisp, crunchy favourite with firm central ribs running the length of its long, deep green leaves. Romaine stands out for its excellent bolt resistance, slow to turn bitter in warm weather, and is perfect for fresh salads, crunchy sandwiches, wraps, or even grilling. Its tall, upright habit also makes it ideal for small spaces and succession planting.

Harvest

June to November — pick the outer leaves regularly for a continuous supply or harvest whole heads when fully mature. Leaves are tender yet sturdy, holding up well in salads and for cooking.

Growing Instructions

Planting: Plant 30cm apart in well-drained soil in a sunny but sheltered spot.

Watering: Keep soil moist until established and during dry periods, avoiding waterlogging.

Pest Protection: Protect from slugs and snails to keep leaves pristine, using barriers or natural deterrents if needed.

Top Tips

Succession Planting: Sow every 3 weeks for a constant harvest.

Revive Wilted Leaves: Pop cut leaves in iced water to bring them back to life.

Sun & Shelter: Full sun encourages crisp, sweet leaves, while a sheltered spot prevents wind or heavy rain from damaging the plants.

Feeding: A light liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks will encourage larger, more flavourful leaves.
