Details

Safari French Bean
(Also known as Green Bean, Kenyan Bean, or Fine Bean)

A sleek, productive dwarf variety that produces an abundance of slender, stringless pods around 10cm long — crisp, tender, and full of flavour. Perfect for steaming, stir-fries, or eating fresh from the garden, this reliable bush type is ideal for smaller spaces or container growing.

Harvest
From June onwards, once pods reach around 10cm long and before the beans inside start to swell. Regular picking keeps the plant producing for weeks on end.

Growing Instructions

  • Planting: Space 10cm apart in well-drained soil or compost, in a sunny yet sheltered position.

  • Soil Preparation: Enrich soil with compost or organic matter before planting for the best results.

  • Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry weather to encourage tender pods.

  • Frost Protection: Beans are frost-sensitive — only plant out after all risk of frost has passed.

  • Feeding: A high-potash liquid feed every two weeks during flowering will boost pod production.

Plant Height
Up to 45cm — compact and perfect for pots, beds, or borders.

Top Tips

  • Pick Often: Harvest every few days to promote new pods and a longer cropping season.

  • Succession Sowing: Plant every 3–4 weeks for a steady supply through summer.

  • Container Friendly: Ideal for patios or balconies — no canes required!

  • Freeze for Later: Blanch and freeze pods to enjoy their flavour year-round.
