Roma Tomatoes

Roma tomatoes are a classic plum variety loved for their rich flavour and meaty texture. Producing heavy crops of firm, oval-shaped fruits, they contain fewer seeds and less juice than round tomatoes, making them perfect for sauces, soups, and cooking. Their dependable growth and delicious harvest make them a favourite for both greenhouse and outdoor growing.

Harvesting

  • Timing: Ready to harvest roughly 12–16 weeks after planting.

  • When to Pick: Fruits should be firm and fully red with a slight shine.

  • Regular Picking: Harvest regularly to encourage more fruits to develop.

Growing Instructions

  • Spacing: Plant around 45–60cm apart to allow good airflow.

  • Position: Grow in a warm, sunny and sheltered position or in a greenhouse.

  • Support: Provide a cane or stake and tie the plant in as it grows.

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially when fruits begin to form.

  • Feeding: Feed weekly with a tomato fertiliser once the first fruits appear.

  • Care: Remove side shoots regularly to help focus energy on fruit production.

Top Tips

  • Perfect for Cooking: Roma tomatoes are ideal for making sauces, passata, and roasting.

  • Sun Lovers: The more sun they receive, the sweeter the fruits will be.

  • Water at the Base: Avoid wetting the leaves to help prevent disease.
