Swiss Chard
(Also known as Leaf Celery)
Sweet, Crisp & Versatile! An easy-to-grow crop that delivers a double harvest of flavour! This leafy celery produces aromatic, celery-flavoured stems and spinach-like leaves that can be enjoyed from spring right through to autumn. Use tender baby leaves in fresh salads, or cook the mature stems and foliage for a sweet, crunchy addition to soups, stir-fries, and side dishes. Perfect for busy gardeners — low effort, high reward!

Harvest
March to October.

Growing Instructions

  • Planting: Plant the plug whole — do not separate the seedlings, as this can damage their roots.

  • Spacing: Space plants 30cm apart in rows, in any good garden soil.

  • Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry periods to encourage tender growth.

  • Harvesting: Pick the outer leaves first, allowing the centre to continue producing fresh foliage.

Top Tips

  • Cooking Tip: Stems are best lightly boiled or steamed until crisp for a mild, sweet crunch.

  • Leaf Use: The mineral-rich leaves make a great spinach substitute when cooked gently.

  • Continuous Crop: Regular picking encourages new, tender leaves throughout the season.

  • Companion Planting: Grow near onions or leeks — their scent helps deter common celery pests.
